Arthur Vickers Collection

Introduction by Nick Tuele

Arthur Vickers is in the forefront of contemporary First Nations artists. He and his peers draw inspiration from their history and heritage within the milieu of 21st century cultural influences. The challenge these artists face is how to transform the traditional designs into modern works of art. Vickers has clearly risen to the challenge and serious art collectors around the world eagerly seek his work, which is instantly identifiable as original “Arthur Vickers.”

Time and time again, Vickers visits the wellspring of his First Nations’ heritage and returns with compelling, iconic images represented in a variety of media. Paintings like “Orca” and “Eagle” are traditional designs rendered in a modern voice. Through his command of the form lines and his use of gold leaf and layer upon layer of paint, the artist creates a unique dimension that inspires the thoughtful viewer’s attention. As visual artist and storyteller, Vickers reminds us of the ancestors’ knowledge that Orca is the helper of humankind and Eagle represents chieftainship.

Vickers is equally notable for the highest degree of craftsmanship he brings to bear in a variety of media. He deploys distinctive methods that push the envelope. For example, unlike many artists, Vickers pulls his own prints using a unique method. He overprints powdered 24 carat gold in multiple layers to produce stunning images in low relief. “Twilight” is a prime example. As the viewer, you feel a sense of tranquillity while meditating on the magic and mystery that the artist instilled in this work.

The artist is accomplished in many media, from drawing and carving to painting to printmaking.
